Gettysburg

Day 2

Nice quinoa bowl breakfast with Nick & Chetty.  At 7:40, they left for work and we hit the road, heading for Gettysburg.  In order to minimize heavy traffic, we stayed on Interstate 84 across Connecticut and crossed the Hudson near Newbugh, NY, thereby avoiding the Tappan Zee and the Jersey suburbs.  We had a lousy lunch at Friendly’s somewhere near Wilkes Barre, PA, and arrived in Gettysburg around 3 pm.

Although we’ve been there twice before in the last two years, we can’t get enough of the Gettysburg battlefields, so we stopped in the National Park Visitors’ Center, picked up a map and did the auto tour one more time.   Spring hasn’t really arrived here yet, it was 32°F, snowing, and and there are no blossoms on the apple trees, so we kept our out of car explorations to a minimum, but we stilled enjoyed the park.

For dinner we returned to “Dining 101”, Trip Advisor’s #1 rated restaurant in Gettysburg.  We’ve eaten there before and their rating is well deserved.  It’s a BYO restaurant and we were well equipped with a nice bottle of Cote du Rhone Rose.  Joni had chicken, I had tagliatelle pasta, and we shared a semolina almond torte for dessert.

After dinner we drove to our campsite at the Pine Grove Furnace State Park, which marks the midpoint of the Appalachian Trail.  I think we’re the only campers in the whole park. Glad we’ve got a van to sleep in tonight, I wouldn’t want to be in a tent.

  1. Sounds like a great trip so far, except for the lunch...hope you had some ice cream! Gettysburg is unbelievable! Your campground looks great too, especially all to yourselves. Safe travels.

  2. I am reminded of a fall camping trip many, many years go. We were in a tent, and the temperature overnight was freezing. Thank goodness we brought Gammel Dansk to warm us.

  3. Did you stick to the BLT system at Friendly's?
